      Diabetes mellitus – an underestimated risk factor<\/h3>\n

      Type 1 diabetes mellitus occurs mainly in children and adolescents for the first time and requires immediate insulin treatment. Type 2 diabetes is usually found in overweight people together with high blood pressure and disorders of lipid metabolism. A special form of diabetes may occur during pregnancy and is termed gestational diabetes. In the event of poor blood sugar control, damage to the eyes (retinopathy), kidneys (nephropathy) and nerves (neuropathy) can occur. The risk of heart diesease, stroke and amputations also increases sharply. If diabetes is not well controlled during pregnancy, the child can become too big at the time of birth (injuries when exiting through the birth canal) and suffer from hypoglycaemia after delivery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>
