Diabetes mellitus Competent support in the practice of Prof. Dr. Bernhard Ludvik in Vienna

Diabetes mellitus – an underestimated risk factor

Type 1 diabetes mellitus occurs mainly in children and adolescents for the first time and requires immediate insulin treatment. Type 2 diabetes is usually found in overweight people together with high blood pressure and disorders of lipid metabolism. A special form of diabetes may occur during pregnancy and is termed gestational diabetes. In the event of poor blood sugar control, damage to the eyes (retinopathy), kidneys (nephropathy) and nerves (neuropathy) can occur. The risk of heart diesease, stroke and amputations also increases sharply. If diabetes is not well controlled during pregnancy, the child can become too big at the time of birth (injuries when exiting through the birth canal) and suffer from hypoglycaemia after delivery.

Innovative diabetes care in Vienna

Treatment is based on a healthy diet and, if necessary, weight loss and sufficient physical activity. The mostly necessary treatment with drugs to lower blood sugar includes various forms, from tablets to drugs for injections and insulin. The type of treatment depends on the blood sugar level, diabetes duration and the accompanying illnesses. An innovative and tailor-made treatment of diabetes requires a high level of competence based on many years of clinical experience, ideally complemented by intensive research. The latter also ensures that the latest forms of treatment are used.

People with diabetes – managers of their disease

Self-monitoring of blood sugar enables the patient to check his/her diabetes control and adjust the respective treatment if necessary. In addition to traditional blood glucose meters, there are also new developments in self-monitoring, which constantly measure sugar in the tissue (glucose sensors) and, if necessary, alert you when the sugar is outside the desired range. People with diabetes must partly manage their illness themselves, together with a doctor who is up to date with the latest knowledge and shows empathy. Diabetes mellitus is a well manageable disease. Proper and effective treatment allows you to live for a long time with good quality of life!
